Spring Means Fresh Produce!

Spring is finally here! The trees are getting their leaves, flowers are blooming and locally grown produce will soon be abounding. Many of us enjoy shopping at local farmers’ markets to buy our produce. You usually are getting items that have been recently harvested and did not have to be shipped from another part of the country (or the world) and you are supporting local agriculture. You get fresh produce that is healthy, environmentally friendly, and supports local businesses. It’s a win-win-win situation.

In addition to shopping at local farm markets, you can buy a share in a local farm, also known as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Local farms may have a CSA component that they offer. Joining a local CSA usually provides individuals or families with a weekly share of produce offered by the farm. The type of produce varies from farm to farm and region to region. Some CSAs offer pick-your-own privileges and may partner with other farms or businesses to offer their customers various food options (such as local honey, eggs, dairy products, and breads).

Belonging to a CSA can also help your entire family eat healthfully and you can educate your children about how food is grown and harvested. Kids love to go berry or apple picking and they are more likely to eat foods they had a part in harvesting and preparing.
