Benefits of Coffee by Lori Skurbe, RDN

Your morning cup of joe or afternoon pick-me-up might do more than wake you up. Recent research highlights many benefits of coffee that go beyond energy.

Health Benefits of Coffee

Regular coffee drinkers are less likely to develop:

  • Heart disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Type 2 Diabetes
How Much Coffee Is Too Much?

While the benefits of coffee are strong, moderation matters. Too much caffeine can impact sleep, cause dehydration, raise blood pressure and heart rate.  Experts recommend limiting caffeine to no more than 400 mg per day. For reference an 8 oz cup of coffee has about 80-100 mg. Pregnant or nursing women should talk with their doctor about safe limits.

What You Add Matters

The benefits of coffee can be overshadowed if you load up on sugar, flavored syrups, cream, or whipped toppings. These extras can lead to weight gain, higher cholesterol, and elevated blood sugar. Instead, opt for low-fat or nonfat milk, and try cinnamon or nutmeg as a natural flavor boost. Enjoy your coffee, but keep it balanced. With mindful habits, the benefits of coffee can support both your health and your daily productivity.
